About this Item

First edition. With two colour plates, including the frontispiece, and 69 black and white illustrations from photographs on 57 plates and with two maps as the endpapers. 8vo, original salmon cloth with Tibetan symbol in gilt on the upper cover, the spine lettered in gilt and featuring a second Tibetan symbol. 414 pp. A very good and fresh copy, the text is fine indeed, the cloth only lightly mellowed by time. This is uncommonly well preserved for paper produced so shortly after the war. AN IMPORTANT AND VERY EARLY WESTERN WORK ON TIBET AND THE DALAI LAMA. Sir Charles Alfred Bell was a personal friend and important associate of the 13th Dalai Lama (1876-1933), the Dalia Lama just previous to the present one. (1876-1933). ".acting as the Dalai Lama's political adviser, [Bell] was in a unique position to study him as a man, as a ruler, and as the head of a religion permeating the lives of many millions of people." - Publisher. Born in Calcutta, Bell joined the Indian Civil Service and after appointment to Political Officer in Sikkim became known as "British India's Ambassador to Tibet.". Bookseller Inventory # 25811
