Very scarce. Hardcover. First edition. 248 pp. with bibliography. Frontispiece portrait of St. Gemma. A tight, fine, clean example; no dust jacket. Biography of Gemma Calgani (1878-1903), born in a small Italian village and who contracted meningitis at age 20. She was healed and attributed the cure to direct intercession of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. According to an early biographer, she began to show signs of the stigmata at age 21. She claimed to have had conversations with her Guardian Angel, with Jesus, the Virgin Mary and certain saints and was reputed to have been able to levitate. She died of tuberculosis in 1903 and was cannonized a saint of the Catholic Church in 1940. Bookseller Inventory # E17332
