About this Item

Hardback copyright 1854; first edition inscribed by author on ffep to "Hon William A. Newell"; from Wikipedia: "William Augustus Newell (September 5, 1817 August 8, 1901), was an American physician and politician, who was a three-term member of the United States House of Representatives, served as a Republican as the 18th Governor of New Jersey, and as the 11th Governor of the Washington Territory from 1880-1884. He is probably best known for, and was most proud of, the Newell Act, which created the United States Life-Saving Service (a Federal agency that grew out of private and local humanitarian efforts to save the lives of shipwrecked mariners and passengers; which ultimately merged with the Revenue Cutter Service to form the United States Coast Guard in 1915)"; inscription is written on marbled ffep and is fading a bit but can still be easily read (actual inscription is much clearer than accompanying photo indicates); features section on young Jefferson Davis as Pierce's Secretary of War; leather boards show light scuffing on edges; raised bands on spine; all edges gilt; engravings sharp with tissue separators affixed; text block tight and square; very light foxing present on a few pages; a few pages toward rear show faint damp-staining to corners; a remarkably well preserved copy of this scarce work, structurally very good with a few cosmetic flaws; 542 clean pages MBR BC.
