Telling a Story

A portrait is a likeness of a person—not just the way they look, but who they are. Including something your model loves, whether a favorite color or outfit or even a favorite pet, can make the portrait all the more personal. Find out what your subject is passionate about, and try to include some element of that in your painting. For this portrait, I had the opportunity to paint an avid rider. Her riding gear, blue ribbon, and horse were natural complements!

Painting a Portrait

Step 1: I use the grid method to transfer my image to a 16 inch x 20 inch canvas. Although I don’t fill in all the values, I do indicate the darker ones so I’ll have a guide as I begin layering. Step 2: My underpainting loosely lays out my core colors. Painting wet-into-wet, I use Prussian blue with phthalo blue for the base, dioxazine purple for the deep values, and Trio with quinacridone magenta around the face. (See “Working Wet-into-Wet” on page 38. ) When the canvas dries, I retrace my sketch in permanent black ink. Step 3: For dark values, I mix a thin wash of Prussian blue, quinacridone blue violet, and raw umber. The bright blue is a bit too vibrant, so I tone it down with gesso. (See “Spreading Gesso” above. ) Then I define my light values using a #8 filbert brush and a mix of white with quinacridone blue violet and cadmium red for the sky, also blocking in trees with a 1 inch flat brush and a mix of phthalo blue, brilliant green, and white. Step 4: I use a little white to define the horse’s face. I build the girl’s face in layers, starting with a mix of cadmium red medium, cadmium yellow medium, and white. For darker parts like the nostrils, I mix raw umber with quinacridone blue violet. I use lighter values of the same mixes next, also going back over the shadows with a mix of dioxazine purple, raw umber, cadmium red medium, and white. For the shadows under the hat, I mix raw umber with purple and cadmium red medium. I darken the lash lines, irises, and pupils with raw umber mixed with Prussian blue, using a touch of ultramarine blue for iris color. The horse’s ears and nose are a thick raw umber, dioxazine purple, and white mix. I also fill in the ribbon, mixing ultramarine blue, quinacridone blue violet, and a touch of white.
