About this Item

First appearance in English translation (by S. S. Koteliansky and Virginia Woolf) of the suppressed chapter from Dostoevsky's The Possessed. Crown 8vo: 169,[1],6(publisher's advertisements)pp. First-issue publisher's binding of French blue-and-white stellate patterned paper-covered boards, ice-blue cloth spine, white paper labels printed in black on spine and upper board, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. Only 750 copies of the first issue were published; a second issue of 300 copies followed in ice-blue cloth. About Near Fine (tips rubbed; spine label glue-stained, as often; spine cloth toned). Wolmer 20. Kirkpatrick B2. "Stavrogin's Confession" is a defining, expurgated section of the The Possessed (or the Devils), which was censored because of its subject matter (the rape and suicide of an 11-year-old young girl). But it is only with the inclusion of this extra-textual material that the girl's suicide makes sense and that the rapist Stavrogin's character is fully revealed. Dostoevsky never saw the missing chapter appear with his novel. Even in recent English translations, it is usually included as an appendix to the main narrative. The introduction and explanatory notes explain how this chapter came to be printed posthumously. A second novel, The Life of a Great Sinner (the plan for which is included here), was never written. Portions of Stavrogin's Confession were published in the first issue of T. S. Eliot's Criterion, alongside Eliot's "Waste Land,:" in October 1922. N. B.
