About this Item

Book design and artwork by W. Harvey Williamson; color photo-reproductions by Seideneck. Includes 4 plans and the supplement section on how to make your own Stabilized Adobe Blocks. A scarce work on the Post-Adobe style of construction; no copies have come to auction in the past 30+ years; only 2 copies recorded in institutional holdings. Light wear to edges; sunning to spine and edges; short split to spine end; lower cover tips clipped else a near fine copy. Comstock is well-known in Carmel as the "Builder of Dreams." He created the cottage style of architecture Carmel is widely known for, inspired by the watercolor illustrations of Arthur Rackham. With the Depression and a desire for cheap building materials, Comstock became interested in adobe and studied Monterey's historic adobe buildings. Again, he developed a new form of architecuture termed 'Post-Adobe' in which heavy grooved bearing beams are placed at intervals in a single layer of stabilized adobe and locked together with waterproof mortar, thus eliminating all possibility for leaks. In 1948 he published at his own expense this title in which he describes Post-Adobe construction, including the formula for "Bitudobe" bricks, complete floor plans for homes and photographs.
