Description:

First Impression ('First published 1972' on copyright page). 8vo: 413,[1]pp. Publisher's sky-blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt; pictorial dust jacket, designed by Eileen Walton, priced £1.80. About Fine (top edge lightly dust-soiled, spine ends bumped) and apparently unread; Near Fine or better jacket (tiny nick and small, almost invisible, closed tear to top edge; usual fading to spine panel, but lettering and design still strong). Second in the Aubrey-Maturin series of novels (many first editions of which we have on hand), set in the early nineteenth century and concerning the adventures of Captain Jack Aubrey and naval surgeon Stephen Maturin. This installment is sometimes described as O'Brian's tribute to Jane Austen, with episodes set in the domestic English countryside. (At the novel's opening, during the Peace of Amiens, Aubrey sets up a bachelor household in a country district and befriends a neighboring family with several marriageable daughters.) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Bookseller Inventory #
