Book Description Cousins, England, 1907. Book Condition: Good. Postally used card with stamp removed. With wonderful portrait photographic image of Walter Guinness in 1907, aged 27.This card was issued and circulated in the course of his successful attempt to win the Bury St.Edmund's By-election on August 24th, 1907.What makes this card evenmore interesting is the comment on rear by the sender it reads: "Excitement of Bury is over.waselectedwith big majority. Guinness 1631. Tates 741.Majority of Guinness 890.Biggest ever obtained in Bury. Had torchlight procession and band. Took horses off and dragged Lady G. and Mr.Guinness round the town to Angel Hotel. Withlove from All." Addressed to a Miss J.Parker in High Wycombe.Obviously written by a member of the Walter Guinness's election team at the time. While the card itself is rare the fact that it records at first hand the election of Guinness to the House of Commons for the first time as the Conservative member for Bury St. Edmunds makes it quite significant. He continued to serve the constituency for a further 24 years until 1931. He had a busy career as a businessman and a politician and was assassinated by a Jewish militant group near his home in Cairo on November 6, 1944. Size: Standard Postcard Size.
