About this Item

329 pp., bibliography. This book consists of the author's own critical and personal reflections on poetry -- both as he "reads" and "writes" it. It seeks to answer a specific and difficult question: just how do the dominant poetic theories in the Philippines address the problems and debates of postcolonialism? The inquiry leads the author to confront the issue of Filipino nationalism -- a problematic discourse. On the one hand, nationalism demarcates the contours of the national body away from its Other, that is to say, its colonial past. On the other, it seeks to conceptually represent and unify into a Self the great diversity of members that supposedly make up this body. Garcia addresses the assumptions and consequences of this contradiction, and engages with the poetics of National Artists Virgilio Almario and University Professor Gémino H. Abad, whom he considered "the foremost commentators on Filipino poetries." The essays in this collection also reflect upon and elaborate on some aspects, influences, intentions, and themes of the author's own poems, hoping perhaps to offer a kind of context -- not of its writing, but rather, for its eventual and prospective, postcolonial reading. 0.0.
