Dark brown endpapers. In very good condition. Cloth soiled at leading top corners, rubbed on edges and a little on boards and spine. Endpapers oiled at edges, rear endpaper chipped at top corner. ?F. Hockliffe, Bedford? bookseller label to front, hinges cracked between endpapers (glue repair to rear), Some dark marks to edges of last index pages else pages very clean and tight throughout. Else a very good 1st edition copy. --- The first edition was published on Nov. 6th., 1880 and 1,500 copies were sold. In this issue there are 2 lines of errata which are corrected in the second thousand of the same year (this copy). In this issue, the advertisements may be the same as those in the first, but are more often dated November 1880. In these both and the 3rd. issue the title on the spine differs slightly from the one on the title-page.
