Book Description Forgotten Books, United States, 2018. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Excerpt from The Prairie and Making of Middle America: Four Centuries of Description This first book, a unit in itself, outlines the treatment of the Middle West, that rich agricultural region of which the distino tive feature is the Prairie, from the time of its discovery to the present day. The first thing that the study should prove is that, in spite of Emerson's and others' denials, this section has been the subject of numerous and varied interpretations which have re?ected all stages of its life. It should further demonstrate the futility of facile generalization concerning the frontier since types from one section were carried over to another and since European romantic traditions shaped many border concepts. The inclusion of historical source materials, ordinarily neglected by the literary historian, will show, I believe, a constant interplay between them and the imaginative treatments, the latter using familiar situations and figures, the former being adorned by some of the most famous creations of the romancers. The survey has been carried beyond the frontier stage to reveal the continu ity of tendencies and the significance for social history of the literary treatments of the prairie, regardless of their aesthetic value, which is in many cases relatively slight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book Description The Torch Press, Cedar Rapids, IA, 1926. Maroon Ribbed Cloth. Condition: Good+. No Jacket. First Edition. xiii, 472 pp. 1st Ed. Dust jacket front and rear panels are laid in. Narrative begins with the Spanish and French exploration of the Mississippi River valley and chronicles the descriptions of that vast area appearing in print up to the time of Dreiser, Sandburg, Masters and others. Twelve B/W reproductions enhance the narrative. There are nearly 40 pages of Bibliographical Notes and Index to assist the reader. Although there are two small tears in the front hinge paper, the book is tight and square. Thr leaves are supple and there is light foxiing to the front and rear signatures. The Torch Press is collectible in its own right - this being one of its commercial publications. The book label of Sydney Greenbie is affixed at the upper corner of the front pastedown. Greenbie was a prolific and eclectic author (20+ titles) in the fields of History and Travel. Undoubtedly he referred to this book many times, perhaps accounting for the brown ink marks at the foreedge (or was it blood?) and the light top edge stains (tea?). Overall Good+. Size: Thick 8vo.
