Elbert Hubbard, here writing in the guise of 'Fra Elbertus', was the president of the Roycrofters, a semi-communal society which became renowned as the leading Arts and Crafts press in the United States. Hubbard (1856-1914) had met William Morris in London in 1890, and, greatly impressed by him, set up his own press along the lines of Kelmscott. These two essays, the first a satire, Tagaste (an ancient Roman colony in what is now Algeria), a metaphor for New York, and the second a less obtuse criticism of capitalist society, typify the Roycrofters' scorn for everything factory-made, and for the cheapening of knowledge.
