About this Item

12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. unpaginated with a nine page biographical sketch of Virgil O. Stamps and 176 numbered hymns. The biography is important though clearly it is written in the history of promoting the Stamps Baxter empire which controlled many of the gospel songs in the early era of singing conventions, Stamps Baxter Schools of Music (including the one in Dallas attended by Bill Gaither and others). Shaped note singing has come back much stronger with strengths for harmony unknown to most modern choral directors; nevertheless, this pristine remarkabl copy is reflective of that era. The title of the book is here though many of the classic older gospel songs are not in all likelihood this is because he hated paying royalties so took only the songs he controlled and those in the public domain. These were the songs that James Blackwood, Jake Hess, J.D. Sumner and G.T. Speer would have known which already had introduced syncopated "worldly rhythrms". There is yet to be written a serious study of Southern Gospel music without the adoration and self-promotion of its adherents. Bookseller Inventory # 016147
