Octavo. From the library of Thomas Hargreaves (1774-1847) a very distinguished miniature painter with his amorial bookplate whose works are highly sought after today. The author made his case with the house of Lords how the present laws of the poor were impractical. The Old Poor Law was passed during the reign of Elizabeth I and the New Poor Law, which was fought by the author passed the following year in 1834, which significantly modified the existing system of poor relief. viii, 116, [I]ii-xxxi, pp., beautifully bound in full green morocco, both boards lavishly decorated in gilt, decorative gilt spine, morocco and silk paneled doublures gilt, silk endpapers. All edges gauffered which also hides a lovely fore-edge painting of Southhampton near the dock with two boats in the harbour. A lovely copy. recased. Bookseller Inventory # 019156
