About this Item

Small 4to. Stiff beige wrappers. 40pp. Fine. A tight, perfectly pristine first edition of the Sixth Annual R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture (200 of which Newman issued later in a hardbound, numbered edition). This copy with choice autograph addition: Tipped to the half-title page is a Typed Note Signed from Newman, 1p, 4" X 5", n.p., n.y. [pencilled "2/4/52" date at lower left by recipient). Addressed to "Carl" (Carl Haverlin, 1899-1985, radio pioneer and noted Broadcast Music, Inc. executive as well as Lincoln/Civil War scholar). Writes Newman, "Hope you don't mind my sending you these memos of persons who will be in NY who should be invited to CWRT [Civil War Round Table]." Signed simply "Ralph" in black ink. Most interesting is the fact that Haverlin is among the top Lincoln collectors profiled in this speech (pp. 21-22) and was alive at the time of its publication. Newman describes him as "Actor, pantomimist with the great Ruth St. Denis, radio pioneer, head of one of the two greatest music licensing companies in the world, writer of science fiction, and the author of the first and only serialized Lincoln story for network radio." A superb copy with outstanding association document. Bookseller Inventory # 41299
