About this title
"Goennel uses her signature simply shaped illustrations to delve into the world of a child's imagination. An unadorned black-and-white drawing shows the unnamed narrator playing at the beach. One has only to turn the page to discover what is happening inside the girl's head....Each bit of text is only one line long, but it's enough of a springboard for the inventive art that make the most of bold images and bright colorings. A good choice for toddlers."--Booklist.
From School Library Journal:PreSchool-K?A young girl uses her imagination to turn ordinary moments into fanciful adventures. While playing by the ocean, she pretends to be a beautiful mermaid. Her cat becomes a ferocious circus tiger, backyard cartwheels turn into an outer-space walk, and a toboggan ride is transformed into a magical journey on a flying capet. As in her previous books, Goennel uses simple language and a faceless, featureless character. A realistic situation is presented on one double-paged spread and illustrated with black-and-white outline drawings. The bold lines and empty spaces make these pictures look temptingly similar to those found in coloring books. The next spread moves into the realm of the imagination, with vibrant, full-color paintings featuring interesting details and textures. A furry family of mice attend a tea party, a colorful fire burns beneath a jet black cauldron, and a beautifully patterned carpet floats against a pink exotic skyline. The layout may encourage children to supply their own fanciful situations before turning the page. However, the difference between the black-and-white and full-color illustrations is a little too jarring and the coloring-book look may be problematic for most libraries.?Joy Fleishhacker, New York Public Library
