About this title

"Very exciting. Well written. I have not read romance books by men so I was curious. Well done! There are shocking elements. Historically, it was interesting and wicked. Hannah and David were so sweet. Worth the read."--reviewer

THE PRICE OF HANNAH BLAKE is in the tantalizing tradition of the Victorian underground erotic novel, but with the pace and suspense of a contemporary thriller, as Hannah Blake fights for survival in Victorian England's bizarre "Duke's Troupe" of dancers and actors. You fall in love with Hannah's beauty, her courage in the face of unimaginable abuse, and her determination to assert her own awakening passion--and love--in the duke's prison of luxury and license.

You are swept along as the unspoiled farm girl from Devon is torn from her family, stripped and appraised by her ruthless instructors, forcibly "initiated" into the cruel erotic games of the young men and women of the troupe--and fights to survive and preserve her deepest values. It is romantic suspense that seizes you and draws you forward ever faster as Hannah falls in love with the man who will risk everything to save her from enslavement to the duke and his consorts--a fate no one ever has escaped.

Here is a bitter and beautiful recreation of the Age of Victoria, a period that has become synonymous with modesty and sexual repression, but which concealed a frenzy of secret lust, twisted sexuality, and cruelty. Striding through these pages, as the peril of young Hannah Blake and her daring lover mounts, are historic figures such as the great reformer Prime Minister William Gladstone, his First Lord of the Admiralty, Sherlock Holmes and the malevolent Professor Moriarty--and the prostitutes, sailors, lords and ladies, courtiers, and often desperately poor English country folk who gave the age its color and character.

Bringing them all together is the unbreakable spirit of Hannah, a prisoner of corruption and lust who awakens to a yearning passion--and love--few in the repressed and rigid age of Victoria could imagine.

Walter Donway has taken elements of Victorian erotica, the contemporary thriller, and the historical novel and--in the white-hot furnace of THE PRICE OF HANNAH BLAKE--forged something greater: a genuine Romantic novel.

THE PRICE OF HANNAH BLAKE is about nothing less than the battle for salvation of womanhood and its dearest desires.

From the Author:

Discovering the homeland of your soul...

I'm an author living in East Hampton, Long Island, who spends at least as much time writing (and reading!) as I do on our glorious beaches or in our art galleries, shops, and restaurants. (Lots more than in our shops! But I like to take my wife, Robin.)

My lifelong love has been stories with gripping plots driven by logic, heroes and heroines driven by impassioned values and desires, and places and action and dialogue that carry me away to "the homeland of my soul." Nothing brings these together like a battle for justice, a struggle for love and the fulfillment of sexual passion, the obsessive need to understand a mystery, a problem, a threat. My first novel, "The Price of Hannah Blake," will be followed soon by more novels, a second book of poetry, and a collection of essays and stories.

I grew up on a farm in Massachusetts, but I've spent my career in New York City as a writer, publishing more than 100 articles, essays, and stories and helping foundations, museums, hospitals, schools, conservation organizations, and all sorts of other good causes with my writing talents. With this experience, and my long love affair with poetry (you can find my book, "Touched By Its Rays" on Amazon), I think you will find I am a stylist whose writing will be a pleasure to read--and will take you into places, characters, and the heart of action in a way that will make the pages fly by.

I have been writing a LOT before publishing "Hannah Blake," just because I love to write, and in fairly short order please look for my next novels: "The Lailly Worm," "O Human Child," and "Sure Fire." Also, a book of short stories and another book of poetry! We have a long trip to make together.

I want to hear from you. Every author does, unless so "celebrated" that he or she has gone into hiding. If you have another minute, I can explain something. Authors on Amazon NEED readers because reader reviews and ratings are the gold standard for other readers, because sales move a book up in prominence on the Amazon site, and because authors need the insights only readers can provide. (Not to leave out that it's such a great feeling to get a message from a reader who understands your work and loves the world you have created in a book!)

So if you like my books, express yourself. And write to me anytime, and often, at or my book imprint: I'm on Facebook, too--the only Walter Donway there, I think.

Keep reading: To experience the world "as it might and ought to be" is the emotional fuel that keeps us all going, willing to fight for our values, willing to keep seeking our happiness in life.
