"He was converted among the Wesleyan Methodists, and by them ordained to the ministry. he left the Methodists and untied with the Congregationalists; light continuing to increase upon him, he followed the Saviour in immersion. In July, 1767 he was ordained pastor of the Devonshire Square church, London. He continued in this office till his death."--Cathcart: Baptist Ency., p.730. "Macgowan was probably more effective with his pen than in the pulpit, certainly if the number of titles authored and the frequency of their reprinting be any criteria. He had a considerable following in America as well as in Britain, and his works were translated into Welsh and Gaelic."--Charlotte Fell-Smith, `Macgowan, John (1726-1780)', rev. J. H. Y. Briggs, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004, accessed 3 May 2013] In this work full of satire and irony, Macgowan mercilessly castigates Oxford University for expelling the six young men "for praying, reading, and expounding the Scriptures." Although listed in Green's bibliography of Anti-Methodist publications, the author is critical only of Oxford University & the Church of England. He does mention in his preface: "Concerning the Sermon I would have it observed, 1. That I pretend not to justify any part of the Methodists conduct, besides praying to God, reading, expounding the scriptures, and singing hymns, &c.". Bookseller Inventory # 17649
