Firts edition. Thick octavo in brown cloth letetred and decorated in gilt and black. xi + 560 pp. with index. Four color plates and over 200 photo engravings. A tight, solidly very good example, gilt lettering bright, shallow wear at the spine extremities and a couple minor faults to the covers. Interior tight and clean. A much better that usually found copy of a scarce work. Edwin Babbitt (1828-1905) was an American physician, spiritualist and early promoter of chromopathy, a theory of healing by use of light, specifically various colored light. Babbitt invented and promoted such alleged haeling devices as chromo lenses, the Babbitt Lamp Shade (which cast a soft blue tint "to soothe and strengthen the eye and nerves"), psychomized paper used in magnetic self healing, and the "Sun and Vapor Bath". While still available in modern reprints, the original 1878 edition is quite scarce. Bookseller Inventory #
