Thick 8vo. in darl green cloth stamped in gilt. lxv + 737 pp. with index, appendix "Dr. Ferrier's Experimantal Researches On The Brain". One full page and 16 small engravings in the text. The Fourth Edition with a new preface. Very good, modest wear at the extremities, front hinge neatly repaired. William Benjamin Carpenter (1813-1885) was a British physiologist and zoologist; his early work in marine zoology led to critical advances in that field in the 1860s. In 1853, his book "The Use and Abuse of Alcoholic Liquors" was among the first to treat alcoholism as a disease.
