Size: Octavo (standard book size). 3-volume set (complete). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Top edge gilt - bright, rich condition. This is the Author's Edition, limited to one thousand copies, this being copy no. 11. There is no date, but the Preface to the Third Edition is dated 1880. Three volumes, three-quarter leather and marbled paper over boards, gilt rule on covers and gilt decoration and lettering on spine, marbled end papers,photogravure frontispiece printed on parchment paper of Herbert Spencer with captioned tissue in Volume I, deckle edges; Volume I xii, 642 pages; Volume II-1, viii, 302 pages, a few line drawings in text; Volume II-2 iv, 696 pages, Subject Index. All three volumes have corners bumped with light wear, some discoloration to the leather (original color seems to have been a deep red which has darkened), Volume I has first signature consisting of front free end paper and to following pages very loose and partially detached; Vol. II-1 has three small nicks in leather on spine. Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) was an English philosopher, biologist, anthropologist, sociologist, and prominent classical liberal political theorist of the Victorian era. Spencer is best-known for coining the expression "survival of the fittest" which he did in Principles of Biology (1864), after reading Darwin's On the Origin of Species.
