The Hamri print is titled "Rain is a Blessing" and shows a group of people huddled under their umbrellas. Gysin has embellished the print by adding strokes of black, white, green, pink, and red that amplify and enhance Hamri's intent. On the back of the frame Gysin has affixed a postcard that prints "Happy New Year" in both English and Arabic as well as the title of the piece. He's signed "love Brion" and next to Hamri's printed name Gysin added "too!" suggesting that this was likely a mutual gift. A wonderful item that resonates with the duel associations of this being both a 1950's Christmas gift to Felicity, a person who turned out to be Gysin's dearest friend and one of the most meaningful relationships of his life, and Hamri, the preeminent Moroccan artist who appears in Gysin's book The Process as the character "Hamid." Gysin lived with Hamri for a time and also worked with him at 1001 Nights, the restaurant that Gysin managed around the time this work was created. The painting is in its original frame (4.25" x 6" framed to 6.75" x 8.5"). Fine, with some tears to the backing paper on the frame not affecting the card that Gysin mounted on the back. A charming artifact evoking two of Gysin's closest friends and the '50s scene in Tangier. Provenance: the descendants of Felicity Mason. Bookseller Inventory #
