About this Item

American army officer, the youngest 4-star general in U.S. history; supreme military commander of NATO (1953-56). Printed DS, 1p, heavy stock 5¼" X 8¼", Paris, France, 1952 January 22. Fine. Finely printed commemorative sheet: Within a green decorative border of laurel leaves appears the title "Supreme Headquarters / Allied Powers Europe / Paris France" (acronym SHAPE) in black; beneath this is the shield or emblem of this organization, a green crest and within this in gold are crossed swords and laurel leaves and scroll bearing the Latin motto "Vigilia Pretium Libertatis." Below this is a paragraph of text explaining "The SHAPE Insignia" -- and below this, within the laurel border, the general boldly signs in black fountain pen: "Alfred M. Gruenther / General, US Army / Chief of Staff Shape / Paris, Jan 22, 1952." Quite an attractive and appropriate souvenir piece, signed at the height of his fame. Accompanied by a superb original black-and-white 1956 news agency glossy photograph (International News Photo), 7" X 9¼". Printed text along right margin reads, "Shown is Alfred M. Gruenther, Supreme Commander of NATO Forces in Europe, as he arrived her [sic] to address a worlds affairs luncheon today. Gen. Gruenther said 'Soviet aggression still is a threat to Europe but could be stopped by present NATO forces'." Gruenther is shown half-length, in full uniform, arriving in Los Angeles. A scarce and desireable vintage photograph. Bookseller Inventory # 27431
