Book Description Knoedler Publishing, Inc., New York, 1981. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Numerous fine full-colour illustrations throughout, both full-page & double-page. Wonderful vivid illustrations by LeRoy Neiman. Large elephant folio volume. This copy is SIGNED & INSCRIBED by Dr. Ruth in black marker on title page: "January 29, 1987 - For Ellen - who also dreams! May the days of your life be filled with carnivals & birthdays! Happy 40th. Love Dr. Ruth". Ruth Westheimer (born 1928), better known as Dr. Ruth, is a German-born, Jewish immigrant to the United States who became famous as a sex therapist, media personality, actress, voice actress, and author. From inner front flap of dustjacket (in part): "Rio - Samba e Carnaval. Samba and Brazil are synonymous. The enticing rhythms and gorgeous women mesmerize Rio. Over the years, the Carnaval in Rio has been relocated, banned, even totally eliminated - only to be resurrected once again. Through Samba and Carnaval, Rio's people and percussionists radiate heat, emotion, warmth, passion and sentiment. Samba can be hot and frantic, simple and restrained, light and breezy, or tender and seductive. Carnaval - everyone making merry - the Cariocas flaunting the unique, irresistible physical charm of their women. Everywhere delirium - revelry fantastico, bizarre, sinuous, lustful, mad - Allegria (happiness). In 1981, LeRoy Neiman was there in the midst of all this. Celebrating, dancing and singing around the clock, along with the Cariocas and thousands of guests from around the world, Neiman kept a sketchbook. He carried it everywhere - through the streets, atop Sugarloaf, to parades, beaches and balls. Throughout four days and nights of merrymaking he was totally involved and inspired. His 140 page sketchbook is faithfully reproduced here - unchanged from the original, in full color and glorious detail. Nothing has been omitted, added or altered". Heavy stock glossy paper. Printed in Japan. Bound in publisher's original white pictorial cloth boards, printed colour endpapers, in printed clear acetate dustjacket. The printed clear acetate dustjacket is adhering to boards & as a consequence has peeled off some of the colour on the book's cover (as seems to be usual with all copies of this title), slight handling wear, otherwise a very nice clean tight solid hardcover copy. Unpaginated (140pp). Very large heavy volume (over 3kg), extra shipping may be required. RARE. FL-11. Size: 43 x 32cm. Signed. Seller Inventory # 001355
