Nobel Laureate Philip S. Hench's copy of one of the copies specially bound for laureates, with his signature dated Mayo Clinic, 1954. 153 pp. Original blue cloth, all edges gilt. Very Good. This is one of the annual volumes that includes the portraits, Nobel Lectures, etc. for the laureates of a given year. The winners in 1952 were Chemistry, Archer J.P. Martin, Richard L.M. Synge; Literature, François Mauriac; Medicine, Selman A. Waksman; Peace, Albert Schweitzer; Physics, Felix Bloch, E. M. Purcell. Titles of the lectures (which are not delievered by all laureates; only certain Peace and Literature winners gave them) may be found on the Nobel Foundation Web site. While I have not seen anything in writing that proves that the blue copies were made specifically for laureates, I have seen several in addition to this one that did belong to them, and they surely were produced for some special purpose, so until I learn otherwise I will continue to suggest that is what the blue volumes are. Philip Showalter Hench (1896-1965) shared the 1950 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Edward Calvin Kendall and Tadeus Reichstein, 'for their discoveries relating to the hormones of the adrenal cortex, their structure and biological effects.'.
