The first edition of a reflection on our lack of control of our own destinies by Nathaniel Hawthorne, in a single monthly issue of "The Democratic Review." It was later published in Volume 1 of "Mosses from an Old Manse". Other contents include a penetrating discourse on Democracy and Liberty so relevant to our own time, by Orestes Brownson, an editorial critique of Brownson's discourse and a long article on capital punishment The frontispiece is a steel engraving by A[rchibald] L.
