London, Methuen and Co., 1905 [Colonial Edition]. Crown octavo, [iii]-151 pages (bound without the half-title and advertisements). Later half roan and marbled boards; spine lettered and ruled in gilt; covers sunned and a little worn; a few spots of foxing to the the preliminaries; a couple of light pencilled emphases; one opening tanned from an acidic insert; trifling splits to a few leaves near the gutter; a very good copy nevertheless. The Colonial issue of the first edition. Edited by Robbie Ross, this edition omits any explicit reference to Wilde's relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas, the addressee of the letter. The complete unexpurgated text was not published until 1962. This copy has the ownership signature (dated 1905) of Kenneth Binns, sometime Australian Commonwealth Parliamentary Librarian. Mason/Millard 418; see Mikolyzk A108. Seller Inventory # 134240
Title: De Profundis
Publisher: Methuen and Co, London
Publication Date: 1905
Condition: Very Good
Seller: WorldofBooks, Goring-By-Sea, WS, United Kingdom
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 'I have nothing to declare,' Wilde once told an American customs official, 'except my genius.' A good part of that genius is evident in the essays and poems included in this volume. There is the intellectual genius of "The Soul of Man under Socialism", in which he clearly foresaw the dangers of economic bureaucracy and state-worship: for Wilde, socialism meant liberation and individuality, not enslavement. Then there is the emotional genius of "De Profundis", the long, introspective and often hostile letter he addressed to Lord Alfred Douglas from prison. And there is the poetical genius of "The Ballad of Reading Gaol", in which Wilde's generous nature could movingly express for another's misery the sorrow he found it hard to express for his own. This collection contains, too, many examples of that humorous and epigrammic genius which captured the London theatre and which, by suddenly casting light from an unexpected angle, widened the bounds of truth. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Seller Inventory # GOR001294089
