About this Item

String-bound pamphlet of 14 pps. in printed wrappers featuring a drawing of the Old Dutch Church on the front cover and its crest on the rear cover. Programme for the bicentennial celebration of the Tarrytown, New York's Old Dutch Church at Sleepy Hollow, held Sunday and Monday, October 10th and 11th, 1897. Several hyms are printed as well as the names of the clergymen who delivered addresses. The graveyard and surroundings of this historic church were the locale used by Washington Irving in his "Legend of Sleepy Hollow", the Hallow'een tale of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. The Horseman, according to the tale and to local legend, was a Hessian soldier who head was carried away by a cannon ball during the American Revolution and who was buried in the graveyard of the Old Dutch Church. (The legens, as one would expect, was not alluded to during these ceremonies.) Very good, covers a bit dusty but string binding still solid. Bookseller Inventory # D9896
