About this Item

Oblong oversized hardcover in red cloyjlettered and satmped in gilt and black. 52 pp. Infroduction by Johnson. Rare. Consists of 52 charts regarding the various components of early Soviet society---population, participation of various members of the population in social and party sectors, women's participation in the govermnet; characteristics of the national econimy, industy, transportation, labor, agriculture, trade and finance, education. Tight and internally clean, some light spotting to the covers. Essentially a privately printed publication and apparently produced in extremely limited quantities; we have never seen another copy and find only very few in institutional holdings. Albert Aaron Johnson, born in Wisconsin in 1880, grew up in the American west and eary recognized the desirability of adult education for those who did no access to institutions of higher learning. He became a professor of agriculture and in the late 1920s while in Russia began working on behalf of the American government to study and suggest improvements in that field. In the late 20s and 30s he wrote several books and articles on the Soviet Union. His works in that area were of great interest to various communist, socialist and even radical groups in the 1930s though he was not known to be affiliated with any of of them.
