About this title

Synopsis:

Chronicles the doomsday prophecies over the centuries by describing the groups of people throughout history who gave up their worldly goods and banded together to await the end of the world.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 7 Up-- This examination of prophets and their prophecies throughout history takes a skeptical view of the ability of anyone to predict future events precisely. Included are discussions of the Millerites, Jehovah's Witnesses, the Greek oracles, omens and portents in nature, the Cumaean Sybil, Mother Shipton, the use of astronomical events such as eclipses and comets, Jeanne Dixon, Nostradamus, etc. People such as 16th-century Anabaptist leader John of Leiden have been both hailed and persecuted as shown by the first chapter's description of his rise and gruesome end. As each person's methods and notable predictions are related, Cohen points out their general failure to be specific or, when exact, to come to fruition. This body of evidence backs his assurance, among others, that the world will not end in 1999 or 2000. Prophecies, beliefs, and occult practices of Asian, African, South American, and indigenous peoples are not included. The information selected seems logical, reasonable, and comforting, although unlikely to dissuade believers in the ``sixth'' sense. --Ann G. Brouse, Steele Memorial Library, Elmira, NY
