About this Item

First edition, 8vo, pp. 245; original cloth in white pictorial dust jacket by the artist Reginald Marsh; jacket edges a bit worn, spine browned, else fine. A noir pugilistic novel about Leslie Phillips, an aspiring prize-fighter who "is offered up as a sacrifice to the sadism of the mob and the greed of the manipulators of the game" (from the front jacket flap). This work was the winner of the Greystone Bookman's Prize Contest, open to all booksellers, librarians, and other members of literary professions; Idell, while supervisor of the Philadelphia school cafeteria system, was also the manager of the lending library chain The Green Library.
