About this Item

Profusely illustrated xiv + 260 pp. 4to Three quarters brown morocco with green linen covered boards and marbled end papers.Gilt titling and decorations on spine, with five bands. T.e.g. M. H. Spielmann, "The History of 'Punch'", Cassell, 1895 (Gutenberg Project). A remarkably well preserved volume of "Punch, the London Chariivari", edited by Mark Lemon, a friend (for one more year) of Charles Dickens until, at Dickens's request, he represented Dickens's cast-off wife in her dispute with Dickens. Lemon was a very successful editor of this periodical. Punch was founded in 1841 by Henry Mayhew, Mark Lemon and others. This volume contains numerous illustrations by John Leech, illustrator of "A Christmas Carol". The cartoons (Leech and "Punch's" editors used the word in this new sense of a comic illustration and popularized the usage) (M. H. Spielmann) show the wide range of his work at "Punch". Other illustrators are represented as well, including John Tenniel (illustrator for Lewis Carrol), Captain H. R. Howard, and others. Faint foxing of free end papers. Mild wear at corners and ends f spine. Minimal trimming at head. Else Very Good +. Bookseller Inventory # 11440
