Book Description London; New York: Macmillan;St Martin's Press, 1966., 1966. VG orig. blue cloth in vg dj. xviii, 372 p.; 7 pl., 4 maps, maps of Northamptonshire 1576 and Yorkshire 1577 on endpapers; 22 cm. St Martin's on tailof spine From the jacket: `Huntingdon was both a nobleman and a puritan. His rank and his religion dominated all he did. The biography shows how the nobility still exercised very real power, for Huntingdon ruled the north ofEngland for the Queen for almost twenty-five years. The book as a whole looks at Elizabethan history from a fresh angle. Usually written about from the standpoint of the government in London, here the political scene is viewed from the provinces. The Church in England throughout Elizabeth's reign remained in a largely undefined state: the Queen and parliament had made a definite break with the catholic church but it was not yet clear how protestant the English church would become.' -- `Sobriety and restraint are not fashionable today. In themselves deliberately unexciting, they were among thevirtues most highly prized by sixteenth-century Protestants, even by Protestant gentlemen of rank. The third Earl of Huntingdon consciously set out toexemplify these qualities and in doing so helped to establish a trend which became a part of the English character.' (p. xiii) -- Includes tables ofHuntingdon's land holdings, mortgages, borrowings, bonds to the crown and claim to the throne, p. 306-44. Binding is Hardcover. Seller Inventory # 000821
