About this title

In "A Purple Hippopotamus Pillow and Pink Penguin Sheets" you meet a nine year-old boy named Pete who attends his best friend's birthday party. Pete watches in fear as his buddy opens an unwanted gift. Then, Pete's birthday arrives and he unwraps the very same undesirable purple hippo pillow and pink penguin sheets. This book is a fun read for all children! However, it was designed more specifically to meet the needs of children with speech and language difficulties. Research has shown repetition of targeted sounds increases the likelihood correct speech will be learned. Both parents and professionals can use the sing-song text to teach in a creative, interactive way!

About the Author:

Amy J. Maurer, M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), teaches individuals of all ages ways to improve their communication abilities. She recently moved home to rural Northwest Iowa from Chicago, Illinois where she worked as a bilingual speech-language clinician in the Cicero public school system. She currently teaches reading at Sylvan Learning Center. Amy worked as a Behavioral Therapist for a four year-old boy who was diagnosed with more than one communication disorder. She combined academic theory and research in speech and language development, along with personal field experience to design a more specialized learning tool for children with diverse needs. The purpose of this book is to support early literacy in the family and school settings.
