About this Item

One of three Philadelphia printings of 1800, the earliest U.S. issues of this much-read, much-imitated satire (an "Irish Pursuits" and a "Philadelphia Pursuits," in addition to numerous replies, appeared in years following), originally printed in 1798. 8vo. 481 (i.e. 483; 433-483 incorrectly numbered 431-481), [1] pp. (lacking final adv. leaf). ESTC W28022; Evans 37940. Contemporary speckled sheep overlaid with later 19th-century quarter cloth; binding worn with leather significantly abraded over board edges, front and back covers pressure-stamped by a now-defunct library, spine with inked title and paper shelving label. With half-title but lacking final advertisement leaf. Front pastedown with bookseller's ticket and stray pencil marks, front free endpaper with inked inscription dated 1848, half-title and title-page with early pencilled inscriptions, back free endpaper lacking. Title-page and several others stamped, verso of last page with pocket. Some age-toning and occasional spotting. Bookseller Inventory # 7404
