Contents include: "Uncle Tom at Home" [the experience of Dr. Henry Barth (Heinrich Barth (1821-1865)) in Africa]; the 1st appearance of "The Spider's Eye" and "The Mezzo-Matti" by Fitz-James O'Brien; "News from Grassland" by Virginia novelist John Esten Cooke (1830-1886); "The Islands of the Pacific" from Piazza Tales by Herman Melville; "Light-House Construction and Illumination"; "The Hasheesh Eater," possibly by Bayard Taylor (1825-1878), and "The Apocalypse of Hasheesh" by Fitz Hugh Ludlow; the 1st appearance of "Going to Mount Katahdin" by Thomas Wentworth Higginson; the 1st appearance of George Henry Calvert's "Weimar in 1825" and "Göttingen in 1824"; "The Children of the Queen," an article about bees by entomologist Sophie McIlvaine Bledsoe Herrick (1837-1919) (possibly her first published scientific work); "The Fate of the Farleighs" by John W. Palmer; travel articles, which include the Florida Keys, and exploring Burma by elephant; articles about slavery in the United States and the presidential election of 1856; and the recurring sections "The World of New York," which transport the reader to ante-bellum New York City. In Good- Condition: both boards are detached but present; leather over spine is cracked and partially lacking; corners heavily rubbed; a few pencilled marginalia; otherwise, text block is clean and solid.
