About this Item
Quarto size, 160 pp., text in Latin. Dom Luigi Guido Grandi (1671-1742) was trained in theology and philosophy; while assigned to teach both fields in Florence he took an interest in mathematics. By 1707 he had gained such recognition in the field of mathematics that he was named court mathematician to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III de Medici. In 1709 he visited England and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, in 1714 he was made a professor of mathematics at The University of Pisa (n.b., per Wiki). This is the second edition of the volume (originally published in 1703), this considered a more accurate version of the work. Through his studies of a curve in 1703, which later became known as the "witch of Agnesi", Grandi helped introduce Leibniz' ideas on calculus to Italy (ibid). Somewhat uncommon in the online marketplace, as of this writing we see only one other copy listed online. Please note that all text is in Latin. ___DESCRIPTION: Rebound in contemporary dark brown leather over boards, five raised compartments on spine with decorations in gilt, white label to upper spine with title handwritten in ink, all board edges with gilt decorations, all edges speckled red, marbled front and rear pastedowns, the first two sections with rubricated initial capitals, the work replete with diagrams and mathematical equations; quarto size (9 7/8 by 6 7/8), pagination: [i-ii] iii-xx (title, adendem statement, preface) 1-139, 140 (publishers advertisement). ___CONDITION: Overall a bit better than good; the leather binding smooth on the boards with very little wear, the corners bumped but not rubbed, a square textblock, the interior clean with just the slightest amount of foxing, the sole prior owner markings we see being two small notations at the top of the front free endpaper; the leather spine is dry with a small amount of loss at the tail, the paper spine label (a later, handmade label affixed over the leather) missing the upper half on the right side (with the left side lifting), lacking both free endpapers, the hinges tender (the boards still securely attached) several leaves have creases at the lower outer margin. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
