About this Item

8vo. (Article): 1-46 pp. (Whole volume) vii, 902 pp. Articles, figs. Navy blue cloth, gilt spine. Later cloth folding case, gilt stamped leather spine label. Blind stamp of Mount Wilson Observatory. FINE. RARE. FIRST EDITION. This is an early contribution in which Weyl developed the concept of continuous groups using matrix representations. With his application of group theory to quantum mechanics he established the modern subject. Weyl was one of the most gifted of Hilbert's students at the University of Gottingen and was greatly influenced by his thinking in the first part of his mathematical career. Weyl was convinced that the value of abstract theories lies in their success in solving classical problems. He worked for a year with Einstein at Zurich and became interested in the general theory of relativity. An inspired mathematician, the flexibility with which he approached the problems of mathematical physics contributed greatly to its early development. Boyer, A History of Mathematics, p. 662; DSB XIV, pp. 281-285. Bookseller Inventory # S8172
