8vo., 20cm, the first edition, 60p., with half title and (Aux [COMMENT1]Critiques( printed on the verso, in contemporary mottled calf, gilt tooled borders on the boards, edges and boards little rubbed, gilt stamped floral motifs in the spine panels, morocco label, laddered gilt decorated inner dentelles, blue endpapers, a.e.g.; internally very clean and sound (lthds). ~ Barbier III: 1126. Louis Jean N�pomuc�ne Lemercier (1771 1840) was a French poet and dramatist, who was subject to criticism by his contemporaries due to his liberal views and his audacious productions. Critical of the romantic movement in literature, the author's works are largely inspired from the authors of Roman and Greek antiquity. This book of poems centers upon four mythic characters: Diane, Bacchus, Jupiter and Vulcan, and is based on Ovid's immortal work, The Metamorphoses.
