[xii], 888, [xx] pp. Main text in parallel columns. Quarto (8-1/2" x 7"). Later buckram, calf lettering piece to spine. Some shelfwear and soiling with some chipping to edges of lettering piece. Red and black title page with Elzevier Minerva device, decorated initials, tail-piece. Light toning to interior, negligible foxing in places, light soiling to title page, which has a minor dampstain, section of final index leaf lacking with some loss to text. Later Owner bookplate to front endleaf, early struck-though signature to title page, interior otherwise clean. Ex-library. Location label to spine, small inkstamp to title page. $150. * Fourth edition, with corrections by Johanes Schultingh and additional notes by the author. Vinnen, a renowned Dutch jurist with an international reputation, was Professor of Law at Leiden. First published in 1642, this famous treatise on Roman law was the standard text in European law schools during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It was also studied in the American colonies by such important lawyer-statesmen as John Adams. Brunet believes this to be the most attractive and desirable edition, an opinion supported by Willems.
