About this Item

Illustrated profusely by George Cruikshank 36 pp. (unnumbered) + 4 pp.publisher's ads. 8vo. Cased in later (19th C.) grey paper covered boards with printed paper label and brown calf spine. Stitched. Spine tooled in the blind. Cohn 679. According to Cohn, Cruikshank did only 12 cuts, having repudiated the woodcut on the title page. This is one of the series of pamphlets by Cruikshank satirizing King George IV and his difficult relationship with Queen Caroline. Many contemporary politicians play roles in the affair and are subject to Cruikshank's satire. The bitterness and pointedness of the satire is extraordinary and characteristic of Cruikshank in his work with Hone. Each illustation is underlined with a pertinent quotation from Shakespeare or from Samuel Butler's "Hudibras" (1663-1678). Boards slightly soiled. Spine faded and mildly worn. Boards slightly warped. Slight toning of p.1 with foxing of margins of p. 1-2. Else, Very Good. Bookseller Inventory # 11463
