Book Description London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1934, 1934. Octavo. Original paper wrappers, spine and front cover lettered in black. With the wraparound band. Light rubbing to spine and extremities, two small annotation marks to front cover, a little foxing to edges, some nicks and wear to wraparound band, a very good copy. First edition, first impression, of MacKintosh's third historical drama written under her theatre pseudonym Gordon Daviot. MacKintosh, who took "Daviot" from the name of a village close to her home city of Inverness, became better known by her other pen name, Josephine Tey, under which she wrote several detective novels. Queen of Scots was first presented at the New Theatre on 8 June 1934. Produced by John Gielgud and with Laurence Olivier playing the Earl of Bothwell, it was a success, "though Gielgud, who had helped her rework it, felt that she made too much of the romantic Mary Stuart and failed to show her as intriguer and harlot also" (ODNB). MacKintosh was close friends with Gielgud who had directed and starred in her first play, Richard of Bordeaux, which was enthusiastically received and helped to launch Gielgud's career. Book Description Gollancz, London, 1934. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Daviot, Gordon aka "Tey, Josephine" pseudonym of Elizabeth Mackintosh. London: Gollancz, 1934. First Edition. A Very Good copy (some foxing on edges and fitfully throughout) in a Very Good example of the scarce original publisher's dust jacket (a bit soiled giving it a mottled look, but surprisingly complete without major flaw) and accompanied by the particularly rare (in our case, never before seen) original publisher's wraparound Promo belly band which advertises "Queen Of Scots/now being performed/at/The New Theater." The band is complete (although only holding on by a thread and is a little chipped) and retains its bright orange color. For the Josephine Tey collector, a scarce item indeed. For the collector of early publisher's wraparound bands, an appealing survival. Bookseller Inventory # 001627

Book Description Gollancz, London, 1934. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. First Edition; First Printing. INSCRIBED to John Gielgud who produced the play at the New Theatre on June 8, 1934. An extraordinarily scarce signature; the author, Elizabeth Mackintosh, best known for her novels as Josephine Tey, was a notoriously private person and almost never made public appearances. The cast of this production included Laurence Olivier and James Mason. Scarce signature and a wonderful association. Bookseller Inventory # 11844
