Book Description Gollancz, London, 1934. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Daviot, Gordon aka "Tey, Josephine" pseudonym of Elizabeth Mackintosh. London: Gollancz, 1934. First Edition. A Very Good copy (some foxing on edges and fitfully throughout) in a Very Good example of the scarce original publisher's dust jacket (a bit soiled giving it a mottled look, but surprisingly complete without major flaw) and accompanied by the particularly rare (in our case, never before seen) original publisher's wraparound Promo belly band which advertises "Queen Of Scots/now being performed/at/The New Theater." The band is complete (although only holding on by a thread and is a little chipped) and retains its bright orange color. For the Josephine Tey collector, a scarce item indeed. For the collector of early publisher's wraparound bands, an appealing survival. Bookseller Inventory # 001627

Book Description 1934. First edition. 8vo., cloth, red paper label to spine, dust jacket. London, Victor Gollancz. Inscribed on the front free endpaper by the author to Laurence Olivier, 'Dear Larry, I may forget how well you played Bothwell. I may even forget the blue doublet and how you looked in it! But I shall remember always the gallant way you took over the part, the way you worked at it in those last crowded days, and the peace and reassurance your coming brought us. Bless you! Gordon'. Olivier had stepped in to replace Ralph Richardson as Bothwell eight days before the play opened and received good reviews. Gordon Daviot was the pen name Elizabeth MacKintosh used when writing historical drama and the name by which she preferred to be known both publicly and privately, rather than her other pseudonym, Josephine Tey. An excellent copy with edges slightly foxed and some browning to endpapers, dust jacket browned with flecks of ink to foot of rear cover and slightly chipped at head of spine. Book Description Gollancz, London, 1934. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. First Edition; First Printing. INSCRIBED to John Gielgud who produced the play at the New Theatre on June 8, 1934. An extraordinarily scarce signature; the author, Elizabeth Mackintosh, best known for her novels as Josephine Tey, was a notoriously private person and almost never made public appearances. The cast of this production included Laurence Olivier and James Mason. Scarce signature and a wonderful association. Bookseller Inventory # 11844
