About this Item

An uncommon, eight-page commemorative pamphlet, staple-bound, in bright red paper wraps. Printed on the occasion of the formation of a special unit of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps to be designated the Queen's Guard, on the 268th anniversary of the granting of the royal charter to the College of William and Mary, the first institution of higher education in North America of royal foundation. The short text includes a greeting from the college president, and descriptions of the establishment of the Queen's Guard, the uniform (single-breasted scarlet tunic, black pants, and black sealskin Grenadier's cap), and the insignia. One page features a color drawing of a Queen's Guard by artist Fritz Kredel; two identical such pages with the same drawing by Kredel are laid in (one of which is somewhat age-darkened). The pamphlet was designed, composed, and printed by the William Byrd Press of Richmond, Virginia; the paper is Hayle, an English hand made sheet. Light edgewear to wraps; sleeve protected.
