About this Item

Book is in fine condition. There is no attached bookplate, no embossed seal, and no writing in the book. Includes collector's notes (Notes From The Archives). "There is some evidence that in the time of the infamous emperor Nero, who ruled from 54 to 68 A.D., the apostle Peter was in Rome. According to a legend, as he was fleeing from the city to escape martyrdom, Saint Peter met Jesus on the Appian Way and asked: 'Quo vadis, domine?' ('Whither goest thou, Master?'). Jesus' reply, 'To Rome, to be crucified again,' inspired Peter to turn back to his duty. A later theologian held that the apostle himself was crucified, one of the multitudes who suffered martyrdom under Nero." The setting of the love story in Quo Vadis? is Rome, amid the persecutions of the early Christians. Thrilling scenes abound, and the author is unrivaled for his vivid pictures of teh ancient world and of Saint Peter. A rare combination of deep erudition and narrative skill, Quo Vadis? is the most widely read Polish novel, and has been reprinted in Europe more often than any other similar work.".
