Book Description New York, London: Charles Scribner's Sons [Scribner], 1935., 1935. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. COMPLETE FOUR VOLUME SET. All early printings with 1935 dates on title pages but without a Scribner's letter code on their copyright pages. All hardcover, H 23.75cm x L 15.75cm, lacking dust jackets but uniformly bound in red cloth. Light soiling and a some spots of mottling to boards; usual sunning to spine cloth with dulling/darkening to spines' gilt stamping which still remains easily discernable; fraying at bumped spine ends; front boards' gilt stamping remains fairly bright. Toning to text block edges; deckle fore-edges. Volumes' interior leaves have some toning and a few spots of soiling but, overall, are clean. Volume I has mild stain at front board's lower left. Volume III slightly binding somewhat stressed between half-title verso and opposing frontis recto but otherwise firm; other volumes' bindings are all solid. Still an attractive set. A Virginia native, Douglas Southall Freeman (1886-1953) earned a bachelor's in 1904 and a Johns Hopkins University PhD. in 1908 at the mere age of 22. Freeman joined the staff of Richmond's THE NEWS LEADER in 1911 and was promoted to editor by 1915, a position which he held until retiring in 1949. Amongst a rigorous schedule of lecturing, radio commentary, and journalist duties, Freeman spent nineteen years researching and writing his biography of General Lee. Scribner's issued Volumes I and II in 1934 with Volumes III and IV following in 1935 leading to the set being awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1935. R.E. LEE has long been lauded as the preeminent biography in American military historical literature. Please note that this set has an approximate shipping weight of 10 pounds (4.53 kg) and will require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
