Synopsis: During his thirty-six years as editor of the Spectator, R.H. Hutton scrutinized the Victorian society of which he was an influential member. Writing on literature, religion, and politics, he was described by his contemporary, John Morely, as "the finest and bravest critic of this generation." In this first full-length study of Hutton's articles, Dr. Woodfield concentrates on his considerations of five prominent figures: J.H. Newman, Matthew Arnold, Alfred Lord Tennyson, William Wordsworth, and George Eliot.

Dust jacket fading to spine. Black cloth with bright gilt titling on spinr. No ownership marks. Frontis portrait plate. 227 pages clean and tight. Described by John Morley in 1897 as `the finest and bravest critic of this generation', R. H. Hutton wrote as a journalist and critic for the whole of the second half of the nineteenth century. He contributed several thousand articles on the literature, religion, and politics of the day to many important periodicals, and particularly to the Spectator, of which he was the influential editor for thirty-six years. This first full-length study of his work draws on the whole range of Hutton's prodigious corpus, almost all of which was published anonymously and only recently positively attributed to him. Dr Woodfield takes as case studies Hutton's work on and the general reception of five major writers and thinkers: J. H. Newman, Matthew Arnold, Tennyson, Wordsworth, and George Eliot, thus throwing fresh light on them as writers, on the relationship between them, and on their intellectual context. This exposition re-draws the map of Victorian culture, and, particularly through its critique of Matthew Arnold and its examination of Hutton's appreciation of the novel, should establish I lutton as a major, even the major post-Romantic critic of the nineteenth century. Malcolm Woodfield is a lecturer in the Department of History, Politics, and English at the University of Rockingham. Size: 8vo. Bookseller Inventory # 114382
