About this Item

641 pages, illustrated. "The availablility in large volume of 16 new metals with rather distinctive new propertoes brought this book into being. We refer to the so-called rare earths and associated elements lanthanum, yttrium, and scandium, which total about one-fourth of our known metals. Here is a practically untapped source of uniqe metals. Elements such as cerium, lanthanum, neodymium, and yttrium are as abundant as lead and tin, and even the least common rare earths are more abundant than the platinum-group metals and gold. The rare earths and the three assoicated elements have been little used-hence were called "rare"-because until very recently they could not conveniently be separated one from the others. Now, largely as a by-product of U. S. Atomic Energy Commission activities, quantities of these materials of high purity are available and their production becomes commerically attractive." FINE HARDCOVER, VERY GOOD DUST JACKET, ex-library from the libaray at Weston Observatory. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 026621
