About this Item

First edition in wrappers, (originally published by Knopf in 1988). With illustrations by Javier Romero, Paul Rivoche, Dennis Ziemienski, and John Martinez 8vo, original printed wrappers. xiv, 370. A fine copy. An unusual anthology of stories by modern writers featuring Philip Marlowe, detective, issued on the centenary of Chandler's birth and designed to fulfill a wish that Chandler once expressed in an unpublished letter: ".it seems that if I could deliver the character of Philip Marlowe, at the risk--somewhat the certainty--of being thought unbearably conceited, I should still be able to believe that Marlowe existed, and not a travesty of him. After all, a great many writers have been trying to steal him from me for fifteen years or more, and they have never made it yet." Some of the writers who here give new life to Marlowe are Loren Estleman, Jonathan Valin, Sara Paretsky, Simon Brett, Robert Randisi, Eric Van Lustbader, among others (including one story, "The Pencil," by Chandler himself).
