About this Item

Publishers Cloth. 8vo. XIV, 125 pages. 21 cm. First edition. This work offers a straightforward description of the refugee problem, in all its complexity and horror, with the lessons of past experience and concrete proposals for immediate action. This book carries into fuller detail the story told by Miss Thompson in her article in the April 1938 issue of Foreign Affairs - an article which stimulated the American Government's convocation of the Evian Conference. Written by Dorothy Thompson (1893-1961) , an American journalist and radio broadcaster, who in 1939 was recognized by Time magazine as the second most influential woman in America next to Eleanor Roosevelt. She is notable as the first American journalist to be expelled from Nazi Germany in 1934 and as one of the few women news commentators on radio during the 1930s. Many fondly referred to her as the "First Lady of American Journalism. " She was an early opponent of Hitler and Fascism, and counted many German-Jewish refugees as her friends. Subjects: Political refugees. Jews. History 1933-1938. Jews - Europe. In defective dustjacket. Clean and fresh. Good + condition. (HOLO2-96-21) HOLO8, wiv0512, AMR4, COMHIST2. (JA) women1.
