About this Item

First edition of the second part bound together with the third edition of the first part. Bentley was an English classical scholar, critic, theologian and Master of Trinity College. He is credited with creating the English school of Hellenism, is ranked with the great heroes of classical learning and called the "founder of historical philology." His REMARKS UPON. is one of the best-known responses to the English philosopher and deist Anthony Collins's DISCOURSE OF FREE-THINKING. "Bentley destroyed any pretensions of Collins to thorough scholarship, exposed many gross blunders, and claimed Collins's principle of free inquiry as his own and that of all the orthodox believers" (Dictionary of National Biography). 86pp each of volumes one and two plus a single leaf of ads at rear (printed on recto only). 8vo., marbled endpapers, boards and page edges; black leather corners and spine, lettered and ruled in gilt with ornaments in four compartments. Tiny, penciled, scholarly notations in margins throughout; verso of marbled endpapers and opposing blanks spotted, otherwise quite fresh and clean. Binding edges worn and front board rubbed, otherwise very good. Bookseller Inventory # 52808
